One of the saddest experiences of the year was seeing Duke Nuke Forever on sale for $9.99 just four months after I purchased it for around 50 bucks. But, it wasn't just the money, you see. The original Duke Nukem 3D was one of my favorite and very first PC games ever, so much fun that got me hooked and excited about the future of gaming. My real disappointment was in Duke Nukem Forever itself being a total letdown and not even coming close to living up to the legendary release. It just drove the nail in the coffin to see it on the discount shelf, so-to-speak.

Extreme Couponing FAQ

Perhaps one of the most popular shows on TLC today is Extreme Couponing. After all, as the cost of living continues to climb, consumers are eagerly employing money saving techniques to their budget. Consequently, many consumers all across America are looking at extreme couponing as way to help their budget. However, if extreme couponing is akin to a foreign language to you then, chances are, you have more questions than answers.

We started watching the Extreme Couponing show on TLC a while back and thought we’d try our hand at some of the tactics these shoppers were using. We have most certainly saved money on groceries after adopting extreme measures, but typically the savings doesn’t rack up in the three or four digit range as you see on each episode of the show. Here is what we at Coupon Claim have been able to put together so far regarding frequently asked extreme couponing questions:

How much time does extreme couponing require? This is entirely up to you. While many people on TLC’s Extreme Couponing show spend hours each week, extreme couponing can also be done in as little as 90 minutes each week, however, that does mean that you may miss a few deals.

What do the assorted couponing acronyms mean? In extreme couponing, you are likely to come across quite a few acronyms. Some of the more common are BOGO (Buy 1 get one), MIR (Mail in Rebate), OYNO (On your next order), B2G1 (Buy 2 get 1), SS (Smart Source), RP (Red Plum), GM (General Mills) and P&G (Proctor & Gamble).

Where can I get coupons? Most of us know that coupons can be found in the Sunday (or perhaps Saturday) paper, but other money saving grocery coupon sources are online locations like couponmom.com, couponsbydede.com and couponclippers.com, store mail outs, asking people you know if you can have their coupon sections, watch for in-store coupon kiosk, perhaps by forming a local coupon swap meet, or even buying them on EBay.

What is the best way to organize coupons for extreme couponing? This, too, is a personal choice; however, many extreme couponers choose to use a 3-ring binder with baseball cardholders, then apply tabs that allow you to organize in a way that helps you the most. Of course, an expandable file is a god choice, but you are limited to the number of sections you can have.

When is the best time to employ coupons? Every time you shop! J However, extreme couponers have learned that, typically, the worst time to use a coupon is the week it is in the paper. Rather, be patient, and more often than not, the coupon will net more savings several weeks down the road.

What about printable coupons? Many sites, such as WomanFreebies.com, Kellogs.com, Valpak.com, coolsavings.com and others will have coupons you can download and print. More cool, is that you can have usually print 2 coupons per computer you have access to. However, do keep in mind that photocopying coupons is crime!

What is a coupon match-up? This is matching your coupon(s) to the store where you will get the best price/savings.

What is stacking? Using a manufactures coupon with a store coupon.

Isn’t it just cheaper to buy store brands? Not necessarily. Quite often, employing extreme couponing techniques results in the name brand being cheaper than a store brand.

Do store employees know their coupon policies? While some do, most do not. Be sure to print copies of the store’s coupon policies to show, when/if necessary.

Is it possible to save on 96% of your grocery bill every week? While it would be nice, it is not very likely. On TLC’s Extreme Couponing show, they do not always show things like the use of “free” item coupons, the use of gift cards and in some cases, stores have broken their own coupon policy in order to allow sensational savings. We find that limits seem to be placed on purchases perhaps in order to prevent extreme coupon arbitrage. For example, a one item per purchase rule can negate the types of mass savings you see in the show. Also, keep in mind that taxes will cut into your total savings.

What is a realistic percentage to expect to save with extreme couponing? For most, 50% of their tally is a common occurrence.

What types of coupon policies are common? Common policies are a limit on how many of an item can be bought and only doubling coupons up to a specific amount.

We hope these extreme couponing FAQs will help you in your quest to save money. At Coupon Claim, we would love to hear about your Extreme Couponing adventures. So, if you are an extreme couponer, tell us your stories. We look forward to hearing from you!

For many areas it got off to a rocky start, with lingering cold fronts and major storms tearing through most states and leaving us dazed and confused. To add to the strain is the continuing economic hardships that have most people feeling the pinch, meaning this is going to be far from a golden summer.

But there are ways you can keep from wasting any unneeded cash over the next few sunny months. Whether you are heading out for a vacation or staying home with the family, all it takes are a few little changes to make all the difference in the world.

Make Your Own Drinks

Apart from being expensive and unhealthy, soda and other bottled drinks are a serious strain on the environment. They might taste good but the cons definitely outweigh that pro. Especially given how much money adds up being spent over the weeks without us even noticing. I learned this first hand when I started putting the amount of money my husband spent on soda in a jar for every one he bought for a month. It came out to – no joke – $72.00. Of course this also counted ice teas and fruit drinks bought by the bottle.

This led him to give it up, and instead we make our own drinks, or mix them from concentrate. A few favorites from my kids come at much less of a cost. We buy frozen juice and keep jugs of it on hand in the fridge, which is always nice for our kids for drinks with meals or for a snack later in the day.

For my husband and myself I make iced tea. I take four bags of camomile and put them in a gallon jug of filtered water. I add in honey and fresh fruit to taste. It tastes even better than the sugar-filled bottled stuff he used to buy, and he can fill his thermos for work.

For iced coffees I make a pot like normal and then let it cool. I then pour it in a jug with as much milk as I personally like (wait until it has cooled or it will steam the milk). I add ice cubes, sugar and vanilla extract. For something sweeter add some chocolate syrup or caramel sauce and some whip cream to the top.

Buy Local Produce

If you have been to the grocers lately you might have had a shock at the rising costs of fresh produce, especially fruit. This has led many people to begin buying canned, but this will limit the taste of your food, increase your sodium intake significantly and fill the world with unneeded cans.

Instead, track down a nearby farmer's market. Most states will have one in every city that operates once or twice a week. The produce is all locally grown so never frozen or transported over state lines, and it is a fraction of the cost. The market opened here last week and I got a pound of strawberries for $1.50 and a watermelon for $.50.

If you want further savings you can join your local co-op. They work by asking you to volunteer an hour or two to your community, and in return they give you a week or so of food for an average sized family for a fraction of regular grocery costs.

Cut The Costly Vacation

I have seen a lot of articles suggesting you 'pretend' to go on a vacation. But let's face it, the prospect of having a faux-getaway at home is depressing when you get right down to it. We all need to get away sometimes, but you can do it in a more cost effective way.

Rather than spending thousands to take off in a plane for a major family vacation, do something a little more close to home and simple. For example, we are planning on heading to California, which is only a state away. We are staying in a cheaper motel since we plan on spending very little time there. Most of our trip will be spent on the beach, which is free.

Rather than going to the main attractions (Disney Land, SeaWorld, ect.), we have found online lists with family-friendly activities that wont cost hundreds for a single day. There won't even be hours-long lines per ride!

Careful With The AC

Sometimes you just have to have the air conditioner on. No one likes to be panting in heat, and it is one of those lovely – if not completely necessary – luxury items we don't want to give up. Try using the auto feature to keep your AC running only to a certain temperature. The usual recommended is 68 F, or maybe as low as 65. Once it hits that temp it will shut off and only turn on to keep it maintained.

You can also do away with it at night all together. Instead, open the windows and in each bedroom put a fan in the window to blow cold air. Try keeping any unnecessary doors (bathrooms, closets, ect.) closed, and the bedroom doors open to circulate that air effectively.

Have An At Home Movie Night

I don't know about you, but I hate sitting in a crowded theater in the summer. Most will have an AC running, but so high you actually have to bring a sweater with you. The people around have been in the hot sun and smell like B.O. All in all, not pleasant.

One of my favorite summer activities is to host an at-home party at my place for friends or family to watch a movie together. We pop air-popped popcorn, pass out lemonade and watch whatever we decide to stream off of Netflix. It is cheaper and much more pleasant, even if the movie isn't the latest high-grossing blockbuster.

Look Into Community Listings

Every year my local university has outdoor concerts and symphonies for free. A park nearby has free outdoor showings of movies, mostly indie but some high-budget Hollywood flicks from the past. This week there is an outdoor street fair for local artists and performers. If I can find all of this in my rather small city, I bet you can find plenty of things in yours for cheap or free.

Get a local paper, especially the free ones, and check out the listings for events happening near you.

Forget The Water Park

Water parks are ridiculously expensive. They might be fun to go to once during the summer for a special treat, but otherwise there are better ways to have fun in the water. Turn on the sprinklers in your yard and let the kids play, get a small pool (there are some great upright ones much bigger than your average kiddy pool), and get a slip and slide or other fun yard accessory.

For a day in the pool, check out some of your community pools. If you live in an apartment with one available for use, take advantage of it. Go in the mornings or evenings to have more of it to yourself.

It's Easy!

See, it doesn't have to be a hassle to save money during the summer, and it doesn't have to cut into your fun, either. What are some of your summer cash-saving tips.

In many states around the US, summer vacation is ending and the bells and alarms associated with school will begin. Before long, the complaints of “I’m bored” and “There’s nothing to do!” will be replaced with “I don’t want to do homework!” and “Mom, I need _________ for my school project.”

Of course, before the school house doors open for the new year of the three “R’s”, parents will find themselves, kids in tow, scurrying to pick up the plethora of items that make up the Back to School shopping list. This list can range from binders to book covers, calculators to computers and clothing of every size or style resulting in astronomical amounts of money to be spent.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to help save money. So, to help you on your back to school shopping experience, here are 10 things to help you save money on your school supply shopping:

	1. Don’t buy everything on the list at once, chances are that $100 calculator will not be needed the very first week of middle school.

	2. Try to reuse what you already have. If your kids still have scissors, crayons, notebooks, etc. from last year, then finish those items first. You can always pick up more later.

	3. Remember, you don’t have to buy your child’s entire school wardrobe in August. Just pick what, if anything, they need. Chances are, the clothes they have been wearing through the summer still fit. Waiting a few weeks will have those “must have” summer outfits on sale making it easy to save money.

	4. Don’t overbuy. If the list calls for a box of 24 crayon, don’t buy a box of 96!

	5. Don’t forget the Dollar Stores. These typically have school supplies in abundance and at lower prices-especially when it comes to multi packs of basic items, which are helpful in having an extra pair of scissors, erasers, notebooks, etc. for the following year.

	6. Watch for loss leaders-typically found in July-where stores sell school supplies at well below cost in order to draw business for other products.

	7. Go shopping without the kids! You will have less stress and be able to pay closer attention to what you purchase saving money and time

8. Buy the basic notebooks, lunch bags, backpacks, etc. then, let your kids decorate with stickers and colorful doodles.

	9. Shop at a store that offers price matching, so you don't have to burn up extra gas to get the good deals at other stores.

	10. Take advantage of tax-free weekends. Here is a list of the tax-free dates across America.

I'm determined to try and save money on my beauty selections. To do that, before I make my purchases I am going to research ahead.

You can't imagine the amount of money I have spent on makeup and beauty products alone every year. Half of the items I never end up using, and if I really took my time to do research, I would discover there are countless of coupons I could be using to save myself money. Being the lover of fashion that I am, I adore purchasing new makeup and beauty products based on the current trends that have hit the fashion industry. However, my interest in fashion and specifically in the makeup category comes at a price.

From now on I'm determined to try and save money on my beauty selections. To do that, before I make my purchases I am going to research ahead and provide myself enough time to discover how I save the money that desperately needs to be saved. In fact – I could most likely purchase twice the amount of beauty items if I really took the time to find fantastic coupons that are available. For example, I was excited when I came across Strawberry.net coupons. Here's a site that not only has a wide variety of products to choose from, but they have some of my favorite name brand products such as Kiehls and Lancome. Look below for a few items that I can save money on by applying coupons: Use Strawberry.net coupons to apply them to your next Kiehl's Lip Gloss purchase.

In addition to Kiehls, Strawberry.net also has addition alluring products. I really need a new powder brush for my foundation and this Lancome brush is catching my eye. Okay, I don't necessarily need it, but I would desire to purchase a new brush because my current one has been used for far too long. It's important to keep your skin acne free by either cleaning your current brush or purchasing a new one every so often. It's time for me to invest in a new brush to keep my skin healthy and fresh. On Strawberry.net's web page this new powder brush is not only on sale, but you can receive free shipping and more by using the coupons. Sounds like a deal to me.

Another company I adore is called Lush and their products are enjoyable to use, gentle, environmentally friendly, and are designed in a creative way. Find the code for Lush Cosmetics by visiting this coupon page to apply $15.00 off any purchase of $80.00 or more. I don't know about you but this Little Green Bag is calling my name. Not only are you saving money by using incredible coupons, but you are also saving the earth. This bag contains a selection of naked products in an environmentally conscious Green Bag. What a great way to save your wallet and the earth at the same time.

Beauty products may be tempting to purchase, but now with the option to save, I won't feel as guilty on my next purchases. I admit I struggle with using coupons, but I've been trying to make more of an effort. I've come to the realization that In the long run coupons will help you with your savings and will also make you feel like you're making an effort in planning a better and brighter future for yourself. See – I can look glam and still save money all at the same time.
