Wal-mart began, not in 1962 like many people think, but actually during the 1950’s when Sam Walton owned a variety of smaller stores that he travelled to. Then in 1962, when he decided to open the first Wal-mart, it was not until he had spent time traveling around the country so that he could learn as much as possible about other retail businesses. He decided that America was ready for a new type of store, so with the support of his family, he managed to get the money to build a Wal-mart store. The store flourished and by the early 1970s, there were a total of 15 Wal-mart stores in the Arkansas area.
As time passed the store became known for its great prices. Over time, the store has grown from those first 15 stores to 8,500 stores in 15 countries, with 55 different names. In fact, in 2010 it was the world’s largest public corporation by revenue, according to the Forbes Global 2000 for that year.
