$hallow Pocket Tips:

Shallow Pocket Tips

With summer adventures, especially those unexpected ones, you want to be sure you can save money. Here are some tips for making the most of your dollars as well as make summer activities even better!

Stretch your grocery budget by using sites that allow you to select the coupons you want and then print them.

WD-40: Remove Crayons from Walls
Use the lubricant and a cloth to remove stubborn crayon marks from the walls just by spraying the wall and wiping with a cloth.

Baking Soda: Clean BBQ Grill
Mix a cup of baking soda with half a cup water to make a paste. Dip your brush into the paste and scrub the grill. The caked on pieces and black residue will come off much quicker and using baking soda is much safer and cheaper than using cleaning chemicals.

Cheerios: Relieve Pain from Poison Ivy, Chickenpox and Sunburns
Pound one to four cups of Cheerios into a powder and add to your bath to soothe your skin while you soak. You may not feel relief while in the tub, but you will soon after.

Brown Sugar: Facial Scrub
A scrub is good to do about once a month to remove dead skin and bacteria built up in pores and remove excess oil from the skin. Brown sugar does just as well as expensive products and will definitely result in a clearer and smoother complexion.

Salt: Cool Something Quickly
You know that feeling when you’re having a BBQ and someone asks for a drink and you realize that no one has put them in the cooler? There’s nothing worse than a warm drink on a hot day. Chill a drink quickly, by adding salt and water to your ice. The drinks will be cold in a matter of minutes; saving your party and making you look smart all at once.

Recipe for the Month:

There’s nothing like a meal that taste great, is easy to make, is healthy and doesn’t break the budget. Here are two that meet these criteria—in fact, they can be made for $3 or less per serving.

Tuna Pomodoro

  • 8 ounce(s) whole-wheat spaghetti
  • 2 tablespoon(s) extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon(s) minced garlic
  • 2 anchovies, minced (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon(s) crushed red pepper, or to taste
  • 1 cup(s) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can(s) chunk light tuna, drained and flaked
  • 2 tablespoon(s) thinly sliced fresh basil

Directions

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook spaghetti, stirring occasionally, until just tender, 9 to 11 minutes or according to package directions. Drain. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add anchovies (if using) and crushed red pepper and cook for 30 seconds more. Add tomatoes, reduce heat to medium, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 8 minutes. Stir in tuna and cook until it is incorporated into the sauce and heated through, 2 minutes more. Divide the spaghetti evenly among 4 plates, top with sauce and garnish with basil. Serve hot.

Portobello and Beef Patty Melt

  • 12 ounce(s) 93%-lean ground beef
  • 2 cup(s) finely chopped Portobello mushroom caps, (about 2), gills removed
  • 3 tablespoon(s) plain dry breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon(s) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon(s) chopped fresh thyme, or 1/2 teaspoon dried
  • 1/4 teaspoon(s) salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon(s) freshly ground pepper
  • 4 slice(s) rye bread
  • 1 clove(s) garlic, peeled
  • 8 teaspoon(s) pickle relish
  • 4 slice(s) Swiss cheese, (2 ounces)

Directions

Position rack in upper third of oven; preheat broiler. Line a broiler pan with foil. Gently mix beef, mushrooms, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire, thyme, salt and pepper in a medium bowl until combined. Shape into 4 patties and place on the prepared pan. Broil until cooked through, 4 to 6 minutes per side. Meanwhile, toast bread. Rub each slice of toast with garlic. Place 1 patty on each piece of toast, top each with 2 teaspoons relish and cover with a slice of cheese. Remove foil and place the sandwiches on the pan; broil until the cheese is just melted, 30 to 60 seconds.
