$hallow Pocket Tips:

Shallow Pocket Tips

To save you money and hopefully, some time as well, here are some Shallow Pocket Tips for using common household items for a variety of jobs. This month, we have a few that can help make school mornings a bit easier.

Cornstarch: Untangle Knots
Sprinkling cornstarch into tough knots, such as shoe laces helps loosen them.

Banana Peel: Polish Leather Shoes
Use the inside of a banana peel to give shoes a professional and natural shine that will last for quite some time.

Dryer Sheets: Gets Rid of Static Electricity
Use dryer sheets to remove static electricity from things such as clothing, TV screens or your own hair. Tame fly away strands by running a dryer sheet over them.

Whipped Cream: Remove Gum from Hair
There are many remedies for removing gum from hair, but this is a lesser known one. Give it a try rather than peanut butter the next time you’re in need.

Olive Oil: Unstick a Zipper
The oil will help the zipper slide more easily, fixing the problem!

Newspapers: Clean Windows and Mirrors
Instead of using a spray and a streaky cloth, use only newspaper to clean off your mirrors and windows for a streak-free finish.

Rubbing Alcohol: Remove Permanent Marker
Dab the surface that has the permanent marker on it with a cloth or cotton ball covered in rubbing alcohol to make it disappear quickly.

Frugality & Food :

cooking items, veggies, stock pot

There’s nothing like a dish that is easy to make, taste great, is healthy and doesn’t break the budget. Here is one that meets these criteria—in fact, it can be made for $1.50 per serving.

Almost Lasagna

1 pound elbow macaroni, cooked, (or other similarly shaped pasta-like small shells)

1 pound Ground turkey, (or beef, chicken, sausage or tofu crumbles)

1 jar Pasta Sauce, (26 ounces)

freshly grated Parmesan cheese

2 eggs

1 pound Ricotta cheese

2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

2 cups Veggies , (diced zucchini, matchstick carrots, etc.)

salt and pepper

  • Brown meat and drain well, if necessary.
  • While meat is cooking, stir together eggs, ricotta, grated Parmesan and salt and pepper.
  • Mix cooked meat, macaroni, sauce and veggies. Add ricotta mixture and blend well.
  • Coat a 9-by-13 baking pan with cooking spray or olive oil and spread half of macaroni mixture evenly over the bottom. Top with a cup of mozzarella and a healthy sprinkle of grated Parmesan. Add the remaining macaroni mixture and top with another cup of mozzarella and another sprinkle of Parmesan. Cover with foil.

  • Heat your oven to 350 degrees F and bake the casserole for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 10 to 20 minutes until the cheese on top is lightly browned and bubbly.
