Shallow Pocket Tips:

Housekeeping doesn’t have to be an all-day process with multi-step jobs performed with expensive cleaners. Here are a few money saving-and perhaps even time saving tips to help make keeping house more manageable.

De-clog drains by pouring ½ cup of baking soda down the drain followed by 1 cup of white vinegar.  This will clean up any build up and if done monthly, can prevent the need for buying Drano or similar products.

A solution of vinegar and water (equal parts) and newspapers rather than paper towels will make windows and mirrors shine and are eco-friendly to boot!

Clean your bathtub by filling with hot water and pouring in a lid of laundry detergent. Let sit for about an hour then drain tub. Then just wipe down with a sponge.

Use baking soda to deodorize carpets. Sprinkle on the floors, let sit 5-10 minutes then vacuum as normal.

Spot cleaning carpets can be done with white vinegar. Pour (or spray) on the problem area, let sit a minute or two and scrub with a brush or cloth. Save wear and tear on your carpets by establishing a “no shoes” rule in the house.

Rather than buying pricey air fresheners, create your own by simmering citrus (orange or lemon are best) cinnamon and cloves in a pan of water. You can tweak the scents to you mood by using lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, vanilla extract or other oils and flowers.

Perhaps the most important way to get housework done and keep the house looking great is to teach your family to help. Children should be taught to and expected, to keep the rooms picked up, beds made and laundry properly taken care of; spouses should also help. There is no reason for one person to do all the housework! By teaching children how to maintain a home, you are preparing them for the future—after all, you don’t want to be cleaning their homes for them one day!
